Andrew took command of the 3rd platoon after the Battle for Cassino in Italy (winter 1943-1944) and also participated in the offensive for Rome as well as the amphibious landing in Southern France.

The tanks from the 3rd Platoon were among the first wave to land at San Tropez, Southern France on August 15th, 1944, for which Andrew received the Bronze Star. At the time he was killed, near Marseille, France, his platoon was not actively fighting the enemy and were some distance from any combat. Andrew was just standing there when an artillery shell came in and killed him where he stood. His Captain, Dave Redle, believed it might have been from a coastal gun.6
