When he turned 18, he joined the paratroopers. He completed basic training at Camp Blanding in Florida and Airborne school at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was assigned to the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 11th Airborne Division and would have taken part in the invasion of Japan but for the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. His regiment was sent to Japan for occupation duty and traveled through Hiroshima on their way to Morioka where they were stationed.
